Making the cord

1 Thread end of yarn down knitting nancy until it emerges from bottom. Wind yam end around little finger to keep it taut and stop it slipping.

2 Keeping yam end tensioned, wrap yam coming from ball around each nail anti-clockwise and pull taut.

3 Lay yam over first wrap on nail. Lift wrap over yam and off nail using yam needle. Work each stitch in this way, pulling yam at bottom of nancy to keep it tensioned, until cord is 40cm (16in) long.

4 To cast off, move last knitted stitch to nail at its left. Lift bottom stitch over top stitch. Repeat until 1 stitch remains, then fasten off yam.

FINISHING THE HAT

Finish the hat as described in the basic pattern on page 27. Dam the yam ends of the cord, then tie a knot at each end. Using the photograph as a guide, wind the cord to make a pleasing shape and pin in place. Stitch to the hat using the cord yam.

loopy scarf

To jazz up the basic Scarf, add several loops of contrasting French knit cord along the ends. Stitch each loop securely in place using matching yam.
