Blanket stitch

This stitch can be used as a decorative way of finishing edges and joining seams. Working about 5mm (yiin) from the edge, take the needle from front to back through the fabric. Move the needle 1 stitch along the edge, then thread from front to back. Point the needle up, catching the yarn around it, and pull through. Continue along the whole seam.

This creates a strong, firm seam. Take extra care on items such as hats when the seam will be more noticeable.

1 Hold the pieces right sides together, pinning them if you wish, and secure the yarn at one end of the seam with a couple of small overlapping stitches.
