Father and mother frogs measure 21 cm [8V*in] in height.

The small frogs are 16cm /6%/n/ high.

Materials: 3mm [No 11, USA 2] knitting needles; 4mm [No 8. USA 5] knitting needles; stuffing.

Note: Use single yarn and 3mm [No 11. USA 2] knitting needles for the boy and girl frogs. Use double yarn and 4mm [No 8, USA 5] knitting needles for the mother and father frogs. They are all worked in the same basic way.

Body

Begin at base of body and use yellow for boy. pink for girl, blue for father and white for mother. Cast on 16 sts. marking centre of cast on edge. St-st 2 rows.

Next row: Inc K wise into first 5 sts, K6, inc K wise into last 5 sts — 26 sts. Beginning with a P row. st-si 11 rows.

Break off yarn and join on green for boy and girl, white for father, orange for mother.

Shape body

Next row: K6. K2tog. K10. K2tog, K6 — 24 sts. Continue in st-st and work 5 rows.

Cast off loosely, for neck edge.

Join row ends for centre back seam. Bring this seam to marked centre of cast on edge, then oversew across cast on sts to close. Turn right side out and stuff firmly. Leave neck edge open.

Head

Begin at front neck edge and using green cast on 4 sts.

1st row: Inc K wise into every st — 8 sts. P 1 row.

Next row: Inc K wise into every st — 16 sts. Beginning with a P row, st-st 7 rows. Continue in st-st.

Dec 1 st at beginning of next and every following row until 8 sts remain.

Inc 1 st at beginning of next and every following row until there are 16 sts. St-st 7 rows.

Next row: (P2tog) to end — 8 sts. St-st 2 rows. Cast off, for back neck edge.

Bring cast on and cast off edges together, then oversew row ends together at each side. Turn right side out and stuff firmly. Gather round neck edge, pull up tightly and fasten off.

Place gathered neck edge of head on top of open neck edge of body. Sew neck edge of body to head.

Use black yarn to work two long stitches for mouth, forming a broken V-shape as shown in the illustration.

Eyes [make two alike]

For the eye. use white, begin at centre back and cast on 6 sts.

1st row: Inc K wise into every st — 12 sts. P 1 row.

Break off white and join on black.

Next row: (K2tog) to end — 6 sts. B & T tightly.

Oversew row ends together and turn right side out. Stuff, then gather round cast on sts, pull up tightly and fasten off. ¡k

For the eyelid use green and cast on 12 sts. St-st 2 rows.

Next row: (K2tog) to end — 6 sts. B & T tightly.

With gathered sts of eyelid at gathered back of eye. sew eyelid to eye. Note that eyelid is not long enough to go right around the eye. Sew the remaining exposed section of the eye to top of head at one side, then catch row ends of eyelid to head also. Sew on the other eye in same way.

[make two alike]

Begin at top edge and use green for boy and girl, blue for father and green for mother. Cast on 11 sts and st-st 10 rows.

Next row: K3. K2tog, K1. K2tog, K3 — 9 sts. For boy. girl and mother, st-st 11 rows.

For father st-st 9 rows, break off yarn and join on green.

St-st 2 rows. Now continue in green for all the frogs.

Work foot shaping

Next row: Inc K wise into every st — 18 sts. St-st 6 rows, then break off yarn.

To make the toes

Slip first 9 sts onto your right hand knitting needle, then place knitting needles side by side, with right side of st-st outside and points of needles level. You now have 9 sts on each knitting needle.

* Thread a sewing needle with a length of green yarn. Use the sewing needle to take 3 sts off one knitting needle, working right to left, then 3 sts off the other needle working left to right. Gather up the sts tightly and oversew to secure. Leave yarn end for now.

Thread sewing needle with another length of green yarn and gather up the next 3 sts on each knitting needle as before. Repeat with the remaining sts. Now sew all the yarn ends into foot. Use green yarn to oversew between the toes

With right side of st-st outside, oversew row ends together. Stuff leg. but not the foot. Sew open top edges of legs to front of body, with oversewn leg seams facing towards each other.

Turn up feet and catch them to legs to hold in place.

Arms [make two alike]

Begin at top edge and use green for boy and girl, white for father, orange for mother. Cast on 8 sts.

St-st 8 rows and dec 1 st at each end of the 8th row — 6 sts.

For boy and girl continue in green. For father and mother break off yarn and join on green. St-st 10 rows for all the frogs.

Work hand shaping

Next row: Inc K wise into every st — 12 sts. St-st 4 rows, then break off yarn.

To make the fingers

Slip first 6 sts onto your right hand knitting needle, then place knitting needles side by side with right side of st-st outside and points of needles level. You now have 6 sts on each knitting needle.

Now work in same way as given for toes from * to **. but take 2 sts off each knitting needle each time instead of 3 sts.

With right side of st-st outside, oversew row ends together. Stuff arm, but not the hand. Sew <ipen top edges of arms to sides of body above body shaping row. with oversewn seams at underarms.

Waistband [for boy and father]

Use yellow for boy, blue for father. Cast on 30 sts. then cast off. Sew waistband round body at last row of lower body colour, catching row ends together at centre back.

Sleeve cuffs [for father and mother]

Make two alike.

Using white cast on 12 sts. Cast off. Sew round arm at last row of sleeve colour, catching row ends together at underarm seam.

Skirt [for girl and mother]

Using white, begin at lower edge and cast on 66 sts. G-st 2 rows.

Break off white and join on pink for girl, orange for mother.

St-st 6 rows for girl. 8 rows for mother.

Cast off. Dampen the skirt and lay it flat then leave to dry.

Join row ends and turn right side out. Sew cast off edge to body to cover last row of lower body colour.
