Begin at base of lantern and using black cast on 11 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: Inc K wise into every st — 22 sts. Next row: P. Next row: P. Next row: K.
Beginning with a K row continue in st-st, joining on and breaking different colours of yarn as required.
Join on yellow and st-st 3 rows.
Beginning with a P row and using yellow, st-st 3 rows.
Join on another strand of black and g-st 2 rows, using double yarn. Break off one strand of black and continue in single black yarn. When working next row. treat the two strands of yarn on each st as one st. Beginning with a K row, st-st 2 rows.
Next row: K1, (K2tog, K2) 5 times. K1 —17 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: K1. (K2tog, K1) 5 times. K1 —12 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: K1, (K2tog) 5 times, K1 — 7 sts. B & T tightly.
Join row ends and turn right side out. Stuff, but 'take care not to distort the shape. Gather round cast on sts, pull up tightly and fasten off, but do not break yarn. Pass needle up through lantern to top. Pull up tightly to flatten base then fasten off. To work the vertical bars on the lantern use black yarn. Work vertical stitches on the two yellow stripes, leaving four clear knitted sts between each bar. Work a second time over each stitch to thicken the bars.
Sew top of lantern to the hook on the pole, with a loop of black yarn.
Curl end of penguin's wing around the pole and sew in place.
