Using 4mm needles cast on 33 [37: 41:45] sts.

From 1st to 4th row sets patt. Keeping continuity of patt as set work for 8 [8:10:10]cm, (3 [3:4:4]in), ending with a rs row. ** Next Row. Patt 2 [3:4:5], pick up loop between last and next st and work into the back of this loop (this will now be referred to as ml), (patt 2, ml) 6 times, patt 19 [22:25:28]. 40 [44:48:52] sts. *** Change to 5mm needles and proceed as follows:-1st Row. Patt 18 [21:24:27], p2, knit into the front of the 2nd st on left hand needle then the front of the 1st st on left hand needle, slip both sts off needle tog (this will now be referred to as T2R), p2, slip next 2 sts to back on CN, k2 then k2 from CN (this will now be referred to as C4B), slip next 2 sts to front on CN, k2 then k2 from CN (this will now be referred to as C4F), p2, knit into the back of the 2nd st on left hand needle then the front of the 1st st on left hand needle, slip both sts off needle tog (this will now be referred to as T2L), p2, patt 2 [3:4:5].

2nd Row. Patt 2 [3:4:5], k2, p2, k2, p8, k2, p2, k2, patt 18 [21:24:27]. 3rd Row. Patt 18 [21:24:27], p2, T2R, p2, k8, p2, T2L, p2, patt 2 [3: 4:5].

4th Row. Patt 2 [3:4:5], k2, p2, k2, p8, k2, p2, k2, patt 18 [21:24:27]. From 1st to 4th row sets patt and patt panel.

Work 4 rows more in patt. Shape Thumb

Working extra sts in patt where possible proceed as follows:-1st Row. Patt 15 [17:19:21], inc in next st, ml, patt 24 [26:28:30]. 42 [46:50:54] sts.

2nd Row. Patt 24 [26:28:30], patt 2 sts for thumb, patt 16 [18:20:22]. 3rd Row. Patt 16 [18:20:22], ml, patt 2 sts for thumb, ml, patt 24 [26:28:30]. 44 [48:52:56] sts. 4th Row. Patt 24 [26:28:30], patt 4 sts for thumb, patt 16 [18:20:22]. Cont inc in this manner to 48 [52: 58:62] sts, (8 [8:10:10] sts in centre for thumb).

Work 1 row without shaping. Divide for Thumb Next Row. Patt 24 [26:30:32], cast on 1 st, turn.

Working on these 10 [10:12:12] sts only work 6 [8:10:12] rows. Shape Top

Break off yarn, run yarn through rem sts, draw up and fasten off.

Join thumb seam.

With rs facing, rejoin yarn to base of thumb and patt rem 24 [26:28:30]
