What a great bag for the beach or picnics. This one is large enough to contain your favourite book, specs and lunch. An additional pocket on the outside can house your mobile phone, too.

Pair 4mm (US 6) knitting needles

One 4mm (US 6) circular needle

50cm/1/fyd of 112cm/44in wide fabric for lining tension

20 sts and 28 rows to 10cm/4in square over st st using 4mm (US 6) needles.

pocket With 4mm (US 6) needles, cast on 21 sts. lining Beg with a k row, work 26 rows in st st. Leave sts on a holder.

base With 4mm (US 6) circular needle, cast on 5 sts. 1 st row (right side) [Kfb] 4 times, k1. 9 sts. 2nd and all wrong side rows Purl. 3rd row [Kfb] 8 times, k1. 17 sts. 5th row [K1, kfb] 8 times, k1. 25 sts. 7th row [K2, kfb] 8 times, k1. 33 sts. 9th row [K3, kfb] 8 times, k1. 41 sts.

Cont to work in st st and inc 8 sts across every right side row as set, working one st more before each inc as set until there are 137 sts, ending with a right side row.

Ridge row (wrong side) Knit. Beg with a p row, work 4 rows. Cast off.

pocket With right side facing and 4mm (US 6) needles, work across 21 sts from pocket top holder as follows:

Moss st row K1, [p1, k1] to end. Rep this row 4 times more. Cast off knitwise.

to make Stitch pocket lining and edges of pocket top in place. Join seam in base and up cont to cast-off edge. Fold top over onto wrong side along ridge row and slipstitch the hem in place. Make a plait/braid approximately 130cm/51in long from 6 strands of yarn, tie each end of the plait and thread through the top hem from one eyelet to the other. Tie together the ends of the plait.

lining Cut a 22cm/8%in circle from strong cardboard (use a plate or bowl to draw around) for the base. Using the card base as a template, cut a circle from fabric allowing an extra 1.5cm/%in all around. Place cardboard base into the knitted bag. Cut a 72 x 39cm/28^ x 151/in piece of fabric, fold in half and stitch into a tube along the shorter sides, taking a 1.5cm/5iin seam. Stitch circular fabric base into one end of the tube. Press a 1.5cm/%in hem onto the wrong side of the open end, insert into the knitted bag, aligning the seams, and slipstitch around the top.
