Hanger cover

Cast on 17 sts and work in garter st (knit every row) until strip measures length of coat hanger when slightly stretched. Bind-off.

Hook cover

To cover a S'A in. (14 cm) hook, cast on 38 sts (measure your hanger hook and adjust accordingly) then work 4 rows garter st. Bind off.

Making up

To cover hanger, find center of work in both length and width and slip this point over hanger hook. Stitch bottom and both ends together with a neat catch stitch.

To cover hook, fold strip around hook and sew edges together so that hook is covered. Attach to hanger cover with catch stitch to avoid hook cover slipping off.

Lavender bag

Cast on 22 sts and work in garter st for 4 rows, then work in st st for 8 in. (20.5 cm), work 4 rows in garter st, and bind off.

With a contrast thread, embroider a chain stitch motif onto front of bag, such as a heart, flower, or initial.

Making up

Fold bag in half, RS together, cast on edge to bound-off edge, and sew both side seams with back stitch.

With a crochet hook, make a 12 in. (30.5 cm) chain, and thread this through top of bag, approx. V* in. (18 mm) from top.

Fill bag with lavender or potpourri. Pull crochet chain tie to secure bag, tie in a bow or knot, and hang over hook of hanger.

• Needles: # I (2.25 mm) and medium-size crochet hook

Gauge: 26 sts/48 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in garter st.

Measurements: cover: 18 in. (46 cm) on top curve of coat hanger

The hanger used here is a standard wooden hanger, 18 in. (46 cm) long and 3A in. (18 mm) wide. Covering a hanger in this way stops clothes slipping off and will help garments retain their shape.
