Although there's one basic method of casting off, there are simple variations that can be useful. Chain cast-off is the easiest and most used. The decrease cast-off is less well known, but gives a very smooth finish. Casting off with a crochet hook makes it easy to cope with slippery yarns or tight stitches.

These diagrams show casting off on the right side of stockinette, how ever you can cast off on a w rong-side row or in knit and purl, depending on the stitch pattern.

It can be more difficult to detect a dropped stitch when using fluffy wools like mohair.
