These swatches were knit in a Shetland-type wool with 2x2 cables crossed every fourth row. Needles three sizes larger than those specified on the yarn label were used. The felted swatch endured three wash cycles, which left the cables very subdued.

These 3x3 cabled swatches were also worked using Shetland-type wool, this time with needles two sizes larger than the yarn band called for.The felted version was put through the hot/cold cycle only twice, so the cables remain prominent.

Knitting Stitches Lace

Knitting lace is an intricate process, so it is certainly worth lace vest, sew the pieces of the vest together and baste doing a test swatch to avoid felting problems. If you are the armholes and the fronts together with cotton thread, felting a large garment, make sure all the openings are then remove the thread after felting.This will keep the secured before felting. For example, if you are making a armholes from ruffling. You may also want to sew cotton thread around the outer neck edge. Basting is not necessary for edges knitted in ribbing. Stitch Patterns

Over the next several pages, you will see a wide variety of two- and three-color stitch patterns. They include lattice stitches and brick stitches that change dramatically when felted. These are slip-stitch patterns, in which you use only one color in each row, carrying the nonworking color or colors up the side of your work. When choosing color patterns for felting, try to achieve good color contrast and carefully consider the yarn weight you'll be using.

Yarn selection is very important with this group. Bold, bulky yarns will maintain the stitch quality and color pattern better than thinner yarns.Two-color patterns using thin yarns look very subtle after felting.Thicker yarns and bold contrast colors work best. Whatever yarns and patterns you choose, make a swatch and felt it before knitting your entire project.

This is a two-color geometric pattern that felts beautifully and that can be used as an overall pattern, an insert or an edging.

Counterpane Knitting Patterns

Counterpanes are richly textured patterns that incorporate cables and lace techniques. Knitted in natural-fiber yarn, they felt beautifully. Knit four or more counterpane squares and sew them together to create a beautiful pillow cover or table mat. I've shown two variations here, but it's fun to find more by searching for historical patterns. Patterns are

O This can be used as an edging or a scarf.

  1. Cut a long, narrow rectangle of felt. Fold each side (long) edge toward the center. Pin and stitch down on each side.
  2. Cut each folded side evenly in parallel cuts, spaced apart. Each cut should extend from the outer edge to within /*" of the center stitching.
  3. Twist the resulting fringe to form curlicues. Sew curls in place to secure.

& Colors A and B. With A, cast on desired number of sts. Purl one row. Row 2 (RS) With A, k across. Row 3 (WS) With B,p across. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for stripe pattern to desired length. Change to solid color, if desired, and work remainder of piece. Felt as described on p.8. After felting, cut even strips of desired width through the stripe pattern.

The stitches most commonly used for knitted fabrics that are to be felted are stockinette stitch and garter stitch. After all, why waste time knitting complicated cables, lace or colorwork when felting blurs stitch definition? But I've experimented with hundreds of stitch patterns that hold their integrity very well in the felting process and allow you to achieve some beautiful and unique effects. In this chapter, I'll show you the cables, mosaics, slip-stitch patterns and lace stitches that work best. I'll also explain how to felt these knitted fabrics and still maintain their visual interest. It's important not to overfelt these pattern stitches, so be sure to read the descriptions that tell you how I made the swatches look the way they do.
