Knitting on

This simple method of casting on needs two needles. Begin by making a slip knot about 6in (15cm) from the end of the yarn and slip it on to a needle held in your left hand. This method produces a loose cast on edge, ideal for lace fabrics where a hard edge is not necessary

1 Insert the right-hand needle into the slip knot as though to knit it and wrap the yarn around the tip.

3 Place the loop on to the left-hand needle a£ shown by inserting the left-hand needle into the front of the loop from right to left as shown.

2 Pull a new loop through but do not slip the stitch off the left-hand needle.

4 Insert the right-hand needle (as though to knit) into the stitch just made and wrap the yarn around the tip. Pull a new loop through and place it on to the left-hand needle.

Repeat step 4 until you have cast on the required number of stitches.
