Purl row of squares

To make the sides of the piece straight, you need a side edge triangle.

wrong side

** Left side edge triangle Rows I and 2 P2 and turn, k2 and turn.

Rows 3 and 4 P into front and back of first st (to shape side edge), p2tog (last st of triangle and next st on right-hand needle to join the pieces together) and turn. k3 and turn.

Rows 5 and 6 P into front and back of first st (p I fb), p I, p2tog and turn, k4 and turn. Rows 7 and 8 PI fb. p2, p2tog and turn, k5 and turn. Rows 9 and 10 PI fb, p3, p2tog and turn, k6 and turn. Rows I I and 12 PI fb, p4, p2tog and turn, k7 and turn.

Row 13 PI fb. p5. p2tog and do not turn. All 8 sts of the base triangle have been used. Leave the 8 sts of the side triangle on the right-hand needle.

Square

With the right-hand needle and wrong side of the work facing, pick up and purl 8 sts evenly along the next edge of the base triangle and turn. Rows I and 2 K7, si I pwise and turn, p7 (including si st of previous row), p2tog (last st of square and next st on right-hand needle to join pieces together) and turn. Repeat these 2 rows 6 times more.

Rows 15 and 16 K7, si I pwise and turn, p7. p2tog and do not turn. All 8 sts of the base triangle have been used. Leave the 8 sts of this square on the right-hand needle. Work the second square over the next 8 sts. To make this side edge straight you need to work a right side edge triangle.

Right side edge triangle

With the right-hand needle and wrong side of the work facing, pick up and purl 8 sts evenly along the next edge of the base triangle and turn. Rows I and 2 K7, si I pwise and turn, p6 (including si st of previous row), p2tog (to shape side edge) and turn. Rows 3 and 4 K6, si I pwise and turn, p5, p2tog and turn. Rows 5 and 6 K5, si I pwise and turn, p4, p2tog and turn. Rows 7 and 8 K4, si I pwise and turn. p3, p2tog and turn. Rows 9 and 10 K3, si I pwise and turn, p2, p2tog and turn. Rows I I and 12 K2. si I pwise and turn, p I, p2tog. Rows 13 and 14 KI. si I pwise and turn. p2tog and turn. All sts are on the left-hand needle ready for the next row of squares. **
