Instructions from the Norwegian Handicraft Union, adapted from a shawl in the Norwegian Folk Museum's collections.

Yarn: 2-ply wool yarn at about 1750 yd/lb, about 300 g/11 oz Needles: 2 ens 80 cm, 3.5 mm/32 in, US 5; crochet hook 3 mm

Cast on 580 sts. Mark the center with a contrasting thread. Knit back and forth for 16 rows in garter st. Begin the decs on the 2nd row: bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the row, knit until 2 sts before the center, ssk, k2 tog on the 2 sts after the center marking, then end the row with k2 tog. On the 3rd row, bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the row, do not increase at center, k2 tog at the end of the row. Alternate these two dec rows throughout the shawl.

After the 16th garter-st row, begin the lace pattern over 23 rows:

Row 1: (260 sts to the center) Bind off 2 sts, *k2 tog, yo*, repeat *-* 127 times, kl (center: 259 sts remain), kl, *yo, k2 tog*, repeat *-*. End row with k2 tog.

Rows 2-4: garter st, continuing to alternate dec rows. Row 5: lace pattern as in row 1. Rows 6-8: garter st, continuing to alternate dec rows. Rows 9-15: Work kl, pi rib for 7 rows, continuing to alternate dec rows.

Rows 16-18: garter st, continuing to alternate dec rows. Row 19: lace pattern: bind offS-.

sts, kl, *k2 tog, yo*, repeat *-* to the center, kl, *yo, k2 tog*, repeat *-*. End row with kl, k2 tog.

Rows 20-22: garter st, continuing to alternate dec rows. Row 23: lace pattern as in row 19.

Rows 24^40: garter st, continuing to alternate dec rows. Repeat rows 1—40. Continue the decs at the center as before until all the sts are gone. Edging: Crochet 2 rows around the whole shawl. Begin on the corner of the cast-on edge with ch3, *1 hdc, chl, skip 1 st*, repeat *-*. At the center back, work 2 hdc in the same st. Continue along the bound-off edges as follows: *ch3,1 slip st in the bound-off sts*, repeat *— *. At the corner, make 2 dc in the same st as the 1 st ch. Finish with 1 slip st in the previous row's chain St. Finish with 1 row of picot edging.

Tie 9-cm/3Vfc-in fringes in the last crochet row along the cast-on edge.
