Arabic Block

This is a slip-stitch adaptation of an ancient Arabic design. The method here has a touch of novelty; in order that the same strand of yarn can be used all the way across each row, the left-hand half of the pattern is always two rows behind the right-hand half. Thus a positive-and-negative checkered effect is achieved, and the blocks of color can be alternated without picking up new strands of yarn in mid-row.

Multiple of 54 sts plus 2. Colors A and B.

Cast on with A and knit one row.

Note: On all right-side rows, si all sl-sts with yarn in back.

Row 1 (Right side)—With B, kl, * |(sl 1, kl) 10 times, si 1, k3, si 1. kl, si 1], k23, (si I, kl) twice; rep from *, end kl. Row 2 and all other wrong-side rows—Knit (or purl) the same sts worked on previous row, with the same color; si all the same sl-sts with yarn in front. Row 3—With A, kl, * [k7, si 1, kl3, si 1, k3, si 1, kl], rep [to] of Row 1; rep from \ end kl.
