This pattern makes firm, round, horizontal cords across the width of the fabric. The size of the cords can be varied, of course, depending on how many rows down the stitches are taken. This pattern is not suitable for vertical combination with other stitch patterns in the same piece, because the cords will pull the knitting up considerably, and cause puckering if there should be plain uncorded stitches alongside. It adapts nicely, however, to separate-piece accents such as patch pockets, button bands, cuffs, collars, and cushion covers. The cords may be worked in a contrasting color, allowing 4 rows of color for each cord in the pattern as given.
Rows I, 3, 5, and 7 (Right side)- Knit. Rows 2, 4, and 6—Kl, purl across to last st, end kl. Row 8 (Cording row)- Kl, * with yarn in front, insert needle from the top down into the head of the purl st 4 rows below the next st on needle; pick up this loop, place it on left-hand needle and purl it together with next st; rep from * on every st across row to last st, end kl.
Repeat Rows 1-8.
