Tilting Block Pattern

Here is an easy-to-work lace check with an absolutely fascinating appearance. The garter-stitch blocks which seem to be tipped at precarious angles arc not worked that way at all; they are simply worked straight across. Small areas of bias lace trellis pull them this way and that, to create a most unusual pattern.

If a smooth-surfaced fabric is desired, instead of the garter-stitch ridges as contrast to the trellis, then all wrong-side rows may be simply purled across. The shapes of the pattern will not change, but the "blocks" will appear in stockinette stitch.

Multiple of 16 sts plus 1.

Rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 (Right side)—* (Ssk, yo) 4 limes, k8; rep from *, end kl. Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8—* K9, p7; rep from *, end kl. Rows 9, 11, 13, and 15—Kl, * k8. (yo, k2 tog) 4 times; rep from *.

Rows 10, 12, 14, and 16—Kl, * p7, k9; rep from * Repeat Rows 1-16.
