Cabling is the perfect way to recreate timeless interlace patterns, with superbly modern results.

hetwisting, intertwining patterns of Celtic knotwork have fascinated peoplefor centuries, and cabling is the perfect way to recreatethese beautiful patterns in knitting. Instead of belngflat, astheyareon paper, knitting enables you to recreate the designs in three dimensions, crossing stitches over the top of one anotherfor real.

Cabling requires a fairly plain yarn ¡fit's to be effective. Tweedy or slightly fuzzyyarns are fine, but strongly variegated colours or too pronounced a texture can make cable patterns much less distinct. Boucleyarns, for example, can just about work with a simple cable, but fine details get lost in the loops.

Iheyarn used for this design Is Rowan Cocoon, a blend of wool with kid mohair, and it works brilliantly with deslgnerSarah Hatton's bold Interlace pattern. Sarah chose to knit her design In Bilberry, a rich yet muted purple. Cocoon is also available in a number of lovely, ■ | _ rustic neutral colours

This pattern is from Rowan 46, Rowan's latest pattern magazine, which is pa eked with chunky, cosy knits for autumn and winter. For details, visit www. knitrowan.com or call 01484 681881.

Thanks to the blend of fibres, Cocoon looks ever so slightly 'frosted'.
