charts

Our charts are illustrations of patterns, and are used instead of writing the pattern out In full. With charts, you can instantly see what you'll be knitting. Each stitch is represented by a symbol in a square, and you'll start knitting at the bottom right-hand corner. Right side rows are read from right to left and wrong side rows from left to right. Each row of squares represents a row of knitting.

Simply Knitting readers love to knit forcharlty-overtheyears we've seen the amazing workyou do, including knitting hats for Innocent smoothie bottles.

innocent has launched this Year's Big Knit in aid of Age Concern amd Help the Aged and we have teamed upwith the lovely people at Fruit Towers to create a knitting competition that will really get your creative julcesf lowing.

We want you to design the mini hats to goon innocent smoothie bottles, the more the merrier. We will be judging them in three categories, the Most Creative, the Best Fruit and the Best Vegetable, so we really want you to amaze us with your skills.

The winner in each category will receive a hamper of yarn and tasty innocent goodies, and the designs will befeaturedon innocent's website.

Please make surethat you attach an entryformtoeach hat (you can photocopy the form) and send it to innocent/Simply Knitting Competition, Bluebear, 60 Bridge Road East, Welwyn Garden City AL71JU. Don't send it in to use at this office, please! The dosing date for entries is 30 October 2009. ------------«<_------

INNOCENT'S BASIC HAT PATTERN

Popyourfeet up with a cup of tea. Using double knittingyarn and some small needles, cast on 28 stitches.

Knit 2 rows. Then, starting with a knit row, work in stocking stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row, knit 1 row and soon) for 12 more rows.

For the next row, knit 2togethertotheend, [14 stitches]

And for the row after that, purl 2 together to the end. [7 stitches]

When you've finished, cut the yarn leaving about 5cm, Thread the cut end of theyarn through a sewing needle, then run it through the loops and remove the knitting needle. Tighten theyarn and sew the little hat together at the side. Once finished, turn it right-side out so that the seam you've just sewn runs up the inside.

Just to check you're on the right track we reckon when laid out flat, the hat dimensions should be about 5-7cm along the bottom and at least 3cm high.

Sew a little bobble onto the top of the hat. if you d id n't lea rn how to ma ke bobbles at school like us, ask atyour local wool shop or department store-they'll be able to helpyou.
