Set up for working heel sts on 1 needle as foil: (RS) Work 19 sts from needle 3 by working [si 1, kl] 9 limes, pi (seam st), then work 18 sts of needle 1 onto the same needle by working [si 1, kl] 9 times—37 heel sts. Hold rem 36 sts on 2 needles to be worked later for instep. Work 37 heel sts back and forth in rows as foil:

Row 1: (WS) SI 1, pl7, kl, pl8. Row 2: (RS) [SI 1, kl] 9 times, pi, [si 1, kl] 9 times.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 until a total of 44 rows have been worked, including the initial heel row, ending with Row 1 (WS)—22 chain sts (slipped selvedge sts) along each edge of heel flap.

Turn heel: Work short rows as foil: Row 1: (RS) SI 1, k22, k2tog, kl, turn. Row2: (WS) SI 1, plO, p2tog, pi, turn.

LEG PATTERN (worked over 32 sts) Rnds 13, and 5: P1, si 1, kl, psso, [yo, k1, yo, k2, si 1, k2tog, psso, k2] 3 times, yo, kl, yo, k1,k2tog, p1. Rnds 2 and 4: Pi, k30, p1. Rnds 6 and 7: Purl. Rnd 8: Pi, k30, p1. Repeat Rnds 1-8 for pattern.

Row 3: SI 1, knit to 1 st before gap made by previous row, k2tog, kl, turn. Row 4: SI 1, purl to 1 st before gap made by previous row, p2tog, pi, turn. Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked—23 sts rem.

Shape gussets: Rejoin for working in the rnd as foil:

Rnd 1: With needle 1, k21 heel sts, k2tog, then pick up and knit 22 sts along right side of heel flap; with needle 2, work 36 instep sts in established patt; with needle .3, pick up and knit 22 sts along left side of heel flap, then knit the first 11 sts from needle 1 again—102 sts total; 33 sts each on needles 1 and 3, 36 instep sts on needle 2. Rnd begins at back of heel. Rnd 2: On needle 1, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, kl; on needle 2, work instep sts as established; on needle 3, kl, si 1, kl, psso, knit to end—2 sts dec'd.

Rnd 3: On needle 1, knit; on needle 2, work sts as established; on needle 3, knit. Rep Rnds 2 and 3 fourteen more times—72 sts rem; 18 sts each on needles 1 and 3, 36 instep sts on needle 2.
