Row 1: (RS) K12, [pi, kl] 6 times, 1<12, Lurn—36 sls on one needle for heel. Hold rem 36 sts on 2 needles to be worked later lor instep.

Work 36 heel sts back and forth in rows as foil:

Row3: SI 1, kl 1, [pi, kl] 6times,kl2. Rows 4 and 6: SI 1, pll, [kl, pi] 6 times, pl2.

Row 5: SI 1, kl 1, [kl, pi] 6 times, kl2. Row 7: SI 1, kl 1, [pi, kl] 6 times, kl2. Rep Rows 2-7 (do not rep Row 1) 3 more limes, then work Rows 2-6 once more—30 heel rows completed; 15 chain sis (slipped selvedge sts) along each edge of heel flap. Turn heel: Work short rows as foil: Row 1: (RS) K19, si 1, kl, psso, kl, turn. Row 2: (WS) P4, p2tog, pi, turn. Row 3: Knit to 1 st before gap made by previous row, si 1, kl, psso, kl, turn. Row 4: Purl 10 1 si before gap made by previous row, p2iog, pi, turn. Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts have been worked—20 heel sts rem. Gussets: Rejoin for working in the rnd as foil:

Rnd 1: With needle 1, k20 heel sts, then pick up and knit 18 sis along right side of heel flap (see Notes); wilh needle 2, work 36 instep sts according to Rnd 1 of Foot chari (page 59); wilh needle 3, pick up and knit 18 sts along left side of heel flap (see Notes), ihen knil the first 10 sts from needle 1 again—92 sts total; 28 sts each on needles 1 and 3, 36 instep sts on needle 2. Rnd begins at back of heel. Rnd 2: Knit sts on needles 1 and 3, work instep sis in patt from Fool chart on needle 2.

Rnd 3: On needle 1, knit to last 3 sis, k2tog, kl; on needle 2, work instep sts in patt from Foot chart; on needle 3, kl, si 1, kl, psso, knil to end—2 sts dec'cl. Rep Rnds 2 and 3 eleven more times—68 sts rem; 16 sts each on needle 1 and 3, 36 instep sts on needle 2.
