Heel flap: Place the next 31 sts (unworked 16 sts from end of previous rnd and first 15 sts of next rnd) onto one needle to work for heel; the purled seam st from the back of the leg should be in the center of the heel needle. Hold rem 27 sts on 2 needles to be worked later for instep. Work 31 heel sts back and forth in rows as foil: Row 1: (RS) SI 1, k30. Row 2: (WS) SI 1, p30. Rep Rows 1 and 2 until a total of 30 rows have been worked, ending with a WS row— 15 chain sts (slipped selvedge sts) along each edge of heel flap.

Tuni heel: Work short rows as foil:

Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts have been worked—5 heel sts rem.

Gussets: Rejoin for working in the rnd as foil:

Rnd 1: With needle 1, k5 heel sts, then pick up and knit 15 sts along right side of heel flap; with needle 2, k27 instep sts; with needle 3, pick up and knit 15 sts along left side of heel flap, then knit the first 3 sts from needle 1 again—62 sts total; 17 heel sts on needle 1, 27 instep sts on needle 2. 18 heel sts on needle 3. Rnd begins at back of heel. Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: On needle 1, knit to last 3 sts. k2tog, kl; on needle 2, k27 instep sts; on needle 3, kl, si 1, kl, psso, knit to end— 2 sts dee'd.

Rep Rnds 2 and 3 three more times—54 sts rem; 13 sts on needle 1, 27 instep sts or. needle 2, 14 sts on needle 3.
