P26-26 Heel Sts On One Needle

Heel flap:

Row 1: (RS) K7, pi, 1<17, turn. Row 2: (WS) SI 1, pl6, kl, pl7, turn—35 sis on one needle for heel; seam si is at center. Hold rem 38 sts on 2 needles to be worked later for instep. Work 35 heel sts back and forth in rows as foil: Row 3." SI 1, kl6, pi, kl7. Row 4: SI 1, pl6, kl, pl7. Rep Rows 3 and 4 until a total of 32 rows have been worked for heel (lap, ending with a WS row—16 chain sis (slipped selvedge sts) at each edge of heel flap. Turn heel: Work short rows as foil: Row 1: (RS) SI 1, kl7, si 1, kl, psso, kl, turn.

Row 2: (WS) SI 1, p2, p2tog, pi, turn. Row 3: SI 1, knit to 1 st before gap made on previous row, si 1, kl, psso, kl, turn. Row 4: SI 1, purl to 1 si before gap made on previous row, p2tog, pi, lurn. Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked, ending with a WS row—19 heel sts rem.

Gussets: Rejoin for working in the rnd as foil:

Rnd 1: With needle 1, kl9 heel sts, then pick up and knit 18 sts along right side of heel flap; with needle 2, work 38 instep sts in patt as established; with needle 3, pick up and knit 17 sts along left side of heel flap, then knit the first 10 heel sts from needle 1 again—92 sts total; 27 sts each on needles 1 and 3, 38 instep sis on needle 2. Rnd begins ai back of heel. Rnd 2: On needle 1, knil to last 3 sts, k2tog, kl; on needle 2, work instep sts in patt; on needle 3, kl, si 1, kl, psso, knit to end— 2 sts dec'd.

Rnd 3: Knil sis on needles 1 and 3, work instep patt as established on needle 2.
