Pointed

A Pointed Toe is best worked on a number of stitches divisible by 4, which is the number of stitches that's eliminated every decrease round. The result is a serpentine pattern that spirals around the tip of the foot. The example in Weldon's begins with 76 stitches. If you want to use this shaping on a sock with just 60 stitches, as for the Madder Ribbed Sock (page 24), follow the instructions below, but begin with Rnd 16.

Begin by dividing the stitches equally among 3 needles so that the center stitch of the bottom of the foot is the first stitch on needle 1. The round begins at the bottom of the foot. Decrease as follows: Rnd 1: *K7, sl 1, kl, psso, klO; rep from *. Rnds 2-4: Knit.

Rnd5: *K7, sl 1, kl, psso, k9; rep from *. Rnds 6-8: Knit.

Rnd 9: *K7, sl 1, kl, psso, k8; rep from *. Rnds 10-12: Knit.

Flat Toe draw ihe needle through all the stitches, and pull tight to close the opening (Glossary, page 117).

FLAT TOE

A Flat Toe can be worked on any number of stitches divisible by 4, which is the number of stitches that's eliminated every decrease round. This popular toe is used on many of the socks in this book.

Begin by arranging the stitches so that half of the stitches are on the instep needle (needle 2) and the other half of the stitches are evenly divided between two sole needles (needles 1 and 3). The round begins at the bottom of the foot. Decrease as follows:

Rnd 1: On needle 1, knit to the last 3 sts, k2tog, kl; on needle 2, kl, si 1, kl, psso, knit to the last 3 sts, k2tog, kl; on needle 3, kl, si 1, kl, psso, knit to end. Rnd 2: Knit.

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 24 stitches remain (12 on the instep needle and 6 on each of the back needles). The instructions in Weldon's say to finish off with a three-needle bind-off. I prefer to use the

Wide Toe

Kitchener stitch (Glossary, page 117) to reduce bulk.

WIDE TOE

A Wide Toe is similar to a Flat Toe, but there are more stitches between the decreases at each side of the foot.

Begin by arranging the stitches so that half of the stitches are on the instep needle (needle 2) and the other half of the stitches are evenly divided between two sole needles (needles 1 and 3). The round begins at the bottom of the foot. Decrease as follows:

Rnd 1: On needle 1, knit to last 6 sts, k2tog, k4; on needle 2, k4, si 1, kl, psso, knit to last 6 sts, k2tog, k4; on needle 3, k4, si 1, kl, psso, knit to end—4 sts decreased. Rnds 2-4: Knit.

Repeat Rnds 1-4 once, then work Rnds 1-3 three times, then repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 28 stitches remain. The instructions in Weldon's say to finish off with a three-needle bind-off. However, I prefer to end this toe with the Kitchener stitch (Glossary, page 117).

SIMPLE RIBBED SOCKS

Weldon's is filled with solid-colored stocking and sock patterns that have ribbing down the leg and often onto the foot. 1 have chosen to offer four variations of ribbed socks, all with a different rib pattern, to illustrate some of the more interesting ribbings and heel and toe shapings used in Weldon's.

MADDER RIBBED SOCK

This ribbed sock has a Dutch or Horseshoe Heel and a Pointed Toe. The heel is similar to a Square Heel, and the toe is a variation on the Star Toe from my first book, Folk Socks {Interweave Press, 1994). Weldon's offers a different style of Star Toe. I have rewritten the instructions for the heel and toe shaping to get the same results as in Weldon's.

Yarrow Ribbed Sock

OAK RIBBED SOCK This ribbed sock has a French Heel and a Round Toe. The French heel is the same as the Round Heel I used in Folk Socks (Interweave Press, 1994). I modified the Round Toe shaping from that shown in Weldon's{the original is worked on a multiple of 10 stitches and is worked over 45 rounds). The toe in this version is worked over a multiple of 8 stitches and requires just 28 rounds.
