Casting off

Once yon have finished yonr knitting, yon need to secure the stitches by casting them off. Casting off is also used to finish a group of stitches to shape the work. The cast-off edge should stretch about as much as the rest of the knitting.

Casting off knitwise

Throughout the projects, you will be instructed to cast off knitwise, purlwise or in pattern.

3 Knit the next stitch on the left needle so that there are two stitches on the right needle once again. Repeat from * until you reach the last stitch. Break off the yarn, leaving a tail of about 15cm (6in).

4 Slip the final stitch off the right needle, thread the tail of yarn through it and pull tight to secure.

2 *With the yarn at the back of the work, insert the tip of the left needle into the first of these knitted stitches, from left to right. Lift this stitch over the second stitch and slip it off the right needle so that you have only one stitch on the right needle.

4 Slip the final stitch off the right needle, thread the tail of yarn through it and pull tight to secure.

Casting off knitwise

3 Knit the next stitch on the left needle so that there are two stitches on the right needle once again. Repeat from * until you reach the last stitch. Break off the yarn, leaving a tail of about 15cm (6in).

1 Knit the first two stitches from the left needle onto the right needle in the usual way.
