Pompom bobby socks

These funkily coloured socks are worked in a stretchy self-patterning polyester, polyamide and wool blend yarn that is perfect for socks because it provides strength and elasticity. The rolled edge is knitted in a single-colour yarn for contrast and the back of the ankle is finished with a cute pompom. Worked on two needles with a top seam, these socks are very easy to make.

Work the first half of the rolled top of the sock, then break off the yarn without casting off the stitches. Cast 32 sts onto the empty needle.

Work the second half of the rolled top in the same way as the first half, keeping the first half on one of the needles throughout.

On row 10, purl across both sets of stitches to join them together. Repeat to complete the rolled top.

Fold the sock RS together and sew the top seam of the main section of the sock using yarn A and a fine backstitch.

Fold the sock WS together to sew the front seam of the rolled top. This is so that the stitching will be hidden when the top rolls outwards.

Cut out two cardboard circles 2.5cm (lin) larger than the pompom you are making. Cut a small wedge out of each circle, then cut out a central 2.5cm (lin) hole.
