Start shaping the back piece by casting on 5 sts at the beginning of row 3 using yarn A. Complete row 3, then knit across row 4 until you reach the cast-on stitches.

When completing row 4 using yarn A, you also need to weave in yarn B to take it to the end of row. Do this by picking up yarn B and placing it across the top of yarn A.

Pick up yarn A and work the next stitch. Continue weaving the two yarns together in this way before working every stitch so that both yarns move to the end of the row.

After completing each stripe, don't break off the yarn. Simply drop that colour and pick up the new colour from under the old one to work the next stripe.

Start shaping the U-shaped edge where the front piece will go by casting off 5 sts at the beginning of row 32.

On row 89, place yarn A across the top of yarn B before casting off each stitch with yarn B. This will move yarn A to the correct position for working row 91 later.

To work blanket stitch, take the needle through the seam, catch the yarn around the top of it, and pull through. Continue around the whole seam.

finishing

Sew in any loose ends to WS on all pieces, then block and steam the sole only. Place the back piece flat on a table RS up, with the U-shaped edge to the right. Fold the front piece in half lengthways, WS together and with side seams touching. Place the folded front piece on top of the back piece, with cast-on and U-shaped edges aligned, and fold down cast-off edge of back piece to sandwich front piece between. Oversew the two pieces together along the U-shaped edge. Fold the whole upper RS together and oversew the cast-on and cast-off edges of the back piece together to create the centre back seam. Turn the upper RS out and position the sole with RS facing outwards. Blanket stitch the sole in place using yarn A.
