These socks, worked in alpaca yarn on two needles, are a variation on project 13 hut have the seam on top of the sock instead of at the hack. The seam is turned into a decorative feature by working lace holes down the side edges. The decorative detailing and softness of the yarn mean that these socks are best worn for relaxing.

The lace pattern on these socks is very simple. Start each RS row by knitting the first stitch, then knitting two stitches together (k2tog).

To work a wrap stitch on a RS row, bring the yarn to the front of the work and slip the next stitch from the left to the right needle without working it.

FINISHING

Sew in any loose ends to WS on all pieces, then block and steam gently except for the rib. Fold the sock lengthways RS together and sew the top seam using a fine backstitch. Turn RS out and fold so that seam is at centre front. Oversew the toe seam on the RS.

To work a wrap stitch on a WS row, take the yarn to the back of the work and slip the next stitch from the left to the right needle without working it.

Bring the yarn to front of the work, then pass the slip stitch from the right needle back onto the left one. You have now completed a wrap stitch.

Work each wrap bar and slip stitch together as one to avoid gaping at the turn of the heel. Use the tip of the right needle to lift the wrap bar and transfer it onto the left needle.

Top-seam socks

Insert the right needle into both the wrap bar and slip stitch on the left needle and work together, knitwise on a RS row (as here) and purlwise on a WS row.

Fold the sock RS together and sew the top seam using a fine backstitch.

Turn RS out, fold the sock so that seam is at centre top, then oversew the toe seam on the RS.
