Socks can range from highly practical to frivolous, depending on the yarn and stitch pattern used to knit them. Using a sparkly, hairy, or variegated yarn will liven up the plainest sock pattern. You can also adjust the leg length from knee-high to ankle length, depending on your preference. Embroidering initials, flowers, or emblems onto the side of the leg can personalize a very plain pair of socks. Most of the socks in this chapter are fairly practical, though the lacier ones are ornamental, too.
